Listening to the body, healing the whole person, on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level.
Steven Sear-Williams - Craniosacral Therapy Exeter

Welcome...

I am a craniosacral therapist working in Exeter. My interests lie in working with stress, anxiety, emotional disturbance and how these effect the body. Your body has its very own healing story which i work with. A sense that you have been truly heard sets the ground for profound and deep healing, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual.

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive practice, that uses a therapist’s light touch to skilfully listen to what your body needs right now. By tuning into your body’s subtle rhythms, we release congestion, compression, and constriction in your whole system. In this way we reduce tension, stress, and painful symptoms, restoring flow and balance.

These subtle rhythms, known as craniosacral motion, are a direct expression of health. They result from the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid which bathes the central nervous system and are tide-like, expressing as an ebb and flow.

This rhythmic pulse is followed by the bones of the head (cranium), the base of the spine (sacrum) and indeed reverberates throughout all the tissues and fluids of the body. It is also described as Primary Respiration and is essential for wellbeing. Life stresses, short or long-term illness or trauma can produce restrictions or imbalances in the craniosacral system, which may manifest as physical, mental, and emotional disturbances.

Quite often, health issues are due to the accumulation of the effects of past events, which the body and mind have difficulty processing.

Rather than trying to forcefully eliminate or fix symptoms, we are connecting to the health of the whole person and facilitating the integration of this previous experience. Almost by design, in today’s hectic and stressful pace of life, CST has become an increasingly popular and versatile treatment for releasing pain and trauma and supporting the bodies natural tendency to self-regulate.

How can Craniosacral Therapy help?

Do you sometimes find life overwhelming? Need help with stress, anxiety, or low mood? Maybe you are seeking relief from headaches, general aches and pains, low energy/fatigue and/or problems sleeping? Or maybe there is just a sense of ‘not feeling quite right’ and a desire to reconnect with your sense of self, vitality, and well-being?

The Benefits

The benefits of craniosacral therapy include a relief of accumulated stress, as well as profound feelings of calmness and relaxation and renewed body awareness. It supports your body’s natural healing processes, which paves the way for:

  • Resolution of the symptoms of illness and injury
  • Regulation of the nervous system
  • A greater capacity to self-resource and deal with life
  • Processing difficult experiences, memories and emotions through embodied awareness
  • Releasing birth trauma which may be affecting you now
  • Cultivating a sense of empowerment and joy within
  • Improved emotional and psychological well being
  • A general sense of space, ease and contentment

What to expect at a session

Your first session will include a written case history, where we discuss why you have come and any relevant past medical history.

Sessions take place lying on your back, fully clothed on a treatment table, where I make gentle contact with various parts of the body, for example, at the feet, head, or base of the spine.

You may feel tingling, a sense of heat or coldness, pulsation, or other sensations on the table. During and after a session it is common to experience profound feelings of calmness and relaxation, along with renewed body awareness.

Some people may find difficult or intense emotions or body sensations arise during a session. Occasionally following a session, people may experience soreness/stiffness and/or, feel emotional or tired. Both these scenarios are perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. Symptoms sometimes worsen before beginning to improve and the process normally lasts 1-3 days.

About Steven Sear-Williams

I had my first craniosacral session in 2016 following the relapse of a herniated disc in my lower back. This had a profound effect on my outlook on health and the human system. I was surprised and amazed at how quickly and effectively this gentle approach helped the symptoms.

Furthermore, once the back problem was sorted, I continued sessions and some deep emotional wounds were healed related to previous traumatic events in my life. Having previously been a rather sceptical Doctor of Chemistry, I gave up my twenty-three-year industry career to train as a therapist.

This step was ten years in the making, as it followed on from an interest in meditation, movement practice and personal healing going back to 2011.
